Since 2006 the Folk Music Center in Siglufjordur has organized a Folk Music Academy to coincide with the Folk Music Festival.
The main topics of the Folk Music Academy in Siglufjord will be the different types of Icelandic traditional and folk music, including rimur, tvisöngur, children’s songs, and psalms. Icelandic folk dances will also be introduced, as well as folk music arrangements, vocal improvisation and instrumental tradition.
Students of the Academy will also get to meet visiting artists from other countries who lecture on the traditional and folk music of their home country.
The concluding event of the Academy is the "Harvest night,” where artists, guests and students of the Academy and work shops, will performe.
The course is a part of the teaching program at the Iceland University of Education. Those students that wish to get merits from the University for the course must write a paper or do a project on
Icelandic folk music and hand it in before the 15th of August. The paper can be in Icelandic, Danish, Norwegian, Swedish or English. Students can choose one of the teachers of the Academy to
collaborate with.
